Who Should Qualify for Maternity/Paternity Leave?

I read in the news that there is a Gay couple in Israel who was granted the first paternity leave for a homosexual couple. as we are preparing to discuss gay marriage in class I was interested in your thoughts on paternity leave for homosexual couples as well as your thoughts on the rights of homosexuals to choose to parent in general whether it be through surrogacy or invitro?

  1. Under a civil union law, I am ok with that.
Are you still doing research with teen cell phone use? I saw this in the paper, thought you might be interested in it.

Girl's cell phone gets dad's hammer

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A cell phone used by a Wyoming 13-year-old to run up a nearly $5,000 phone bill will text no more, thanks to her angry father and his hammer.

Dena Christoffersen of Cheyenne sent or received about 20,000 text messages over about a month, and her parents' phone plan didn't cover texting.
    Story continues below

Gregg Christoffersen told KUSA-TV of Denver this week that he thought texting had been disabled on his daughter's phone, which he smashed hours after getting a phone bill for more than $4,750.

The family says Verizon has been willing to knock the bill down to a reasonable level.

Dena has been grounded until the end of school.

  2. I think giving maternal & paternal leave for parents (gay or strait) will have a positive impact on the well-being of any family. Less stress, more family time, more bonding, and hopefully a secure attachment. I would be willing to pay more in taxes (and I don't have kids) to the government so that we (USA) could have a good mat/pat leave act.

  3. I believe anyone who has a child should be allowed access to paternity and maternity leave. For me it is more about the child than the sex of the parents. With the legalization of civil unions and marriage to gay/lesbian couples I think this will fall right in line with the policy changes.

  4. Attachment is important for all children, not just those whose parents happen to be heterosexual. I definitely believe it is the best interest of children for all parents to have maternal & paternal leave.
